In a significant recognition of his innovative contributions, Arumugam Manthiram, a distinguished faculty member of the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Texas Materials Institute at UT Austin, was elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) in June 2024.

The NAI Fellows Program celebrates academic inventors who have demonstrated exceptional creativity in developing impactful inventions that enhance quality of life, spur economic development, and benefit society at large. Election to NAI Fellow status represents the highest honor bestowed upon academic inventors.

Manthiram joins a prestigious cohort of 1,898 Fellows worldwide, representing over 300 renowned universities, governmental, and non-profit research institutes. Collectively, NAI Fellows hold an impressive portfolio of more than 63,000 U.S. patents, which have led to the development of over 13,000 licensed technologies, spawned 3,200 companies, and contributed to the creation of over 1 million jobs. These innovations have collectively generated more than $3 trillion in revenue.

Among his peers in the NAI Fellows community are over 170 presidents and senior leaders of research universities and institutes, approximately 710 members of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, as well as numerous recipients of the U.S. National Medal of Technology and Innovation, U.S. National Medal of Science, and Nobel Laureates.

Manthiram's induction into the NAI underscores his influential role in advancing technology and innovation, further cementing his legacy as a leader in the field of mechanical engineering and materials science. His groundbreaking work continues to drive forward new discoveries that promise to shape the future of science and technology.
