Located at the edge of the Texas Hill Country, Austin is ideal for year-round jogging, cycling, hiking on the city’s many trails, and swimming at Barton Springs or Deep Eddy Pool. Ranked the 11th “Fittest City” in the nation, Austin boasts a panoply of options for the active resident. The sprawling Zilker Park covers a massive 351 acres stocked with volleyball courts, running trails, botanical gardens, boat and kayak rentals, stand up paddle board shops, tennis courts, and disk golf targets, just to name a few. And of course for the sun worshipper in all of us, the green Zilker grass is a welcome spot for a summer picnic or the fantastically fun Zilker Kite Festival held every year in early Spring.
For the sports enthusiast, the University of Texas Longhorns are perennial favorites in football, basketball, baseball, track, swimming and other sports. Tickets are available to graduate students for a nominal fee. Austin is also home to the Huns Rugby team, the Austin Toros basketball team, the Texas Rollergirls, and the Texas Stars AHL hockey team, giving every sports fan a team to follow in the capitol city.
