Professional Development

Within the Materials Science and Engineering Graduate Program

We have developed several resources to assist our graduate students in their career development while in our program, which we have conveniently included here.

The Professional Development Timeline for PhD and MS Students outlines what professional development experience students should pursue through the various phases of their degree pursuit.

The General Expectations for Successful Graduate Students seminar powerpoint provides tips and strategies for new students to engage purposefully and maximize their experience in graduate school.

The Definition of Reading in Graduate School seminar powerpoint provides tips and strategies for new students to find, strategically read, and organize journal papers for later use in publications of their own.

The Writing in Graduate School seminar powerpoint provides tips and strategies for students to consult when they write abstracts, papers, and theses/dissertations.

Within the Cockrell School of Engineering

Graduate Leadership Series

Held annually in the spring semester, Engineering Student Life’s Graduate Leadership Series (GLS) programs are four hour, on-campus programs for graduate students in the Cockrell School that provide professional development in engineering leadership and ethics.

A highlight of both GLS programs is the opportunity for participants to talk with executives and leaders from the engineering industry and the community, who join the participants at dinner and for the after-dinner session.

Within the University

Graduate Student Instructor Program

In collaboration with UT’s academic departments and graduate student support organizations, the GSI program, offered by the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), provides opportunities to advance graduate students’ pedagogical, academic, and professional progress. The GSI Program is an initiative of the Office of the Provost, the Office of Graduate Studies, and the CTL.

Intellectual Entrepreneurship Program

IEP is premised on the belief that intellect is not limited to academia and entrepreneurship is not restricted to the business sector. IEP is committed to developing innovative, collaborative, and sustainable ways for universities to work with their communities to solve complex problems, and to develop ‘citizen-scholars’.

Graduate Professional Development Week

The Graduate Student Assembly organizes a professional development week for Graduate students, which features seminars on varior career-related topics.
