Located at the edge of the Texas Hill Country--rolling terrain of limestone bluffs, springs, rivers and lakes--Austin is ideal for year-round jogging, cycling, hiking on the city's many trails, or swimming at Barton Springs or one of the areas other many other swimming holes. There are a number of excellent golf courses in the area as well as excellent opportunities for rowing, kayaking, canoeing, camping, rock climbing, frisbee golf, mountain biking, fishing and more. Austin has something for everyone.
Austin is kicknamed the "Live Music Capital of the World" and has more than 120 live music venues offering a complete range of musical styles, from rhythm and blues and Southern jazz to hard rock, country/western and Tejano. The University of Texas Longhorns are perenial favorites in football, basketball, baseball, track, swimming and other sports. Tickets are available to graduate students for a nominal fee. In San Antonio (approx. 80 mile), an NBA Spurs game is a short trip away and bit further in Dallas and Houston, there are professional football, basketball, hockey, and baseball teams.
