Doctoral Portfolio Program

Program Overview

The Doctoral Portfolio Program in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (known as the Nano Portfolio Program) is a certificate program that provides an opportunity for doctoral students to obtain credentials in nanoscience and nanotechnology while they are completing the requirements for a doctoral degree at UT-Austin.  It is a formal mechanism for recognizing and rewarding students who obtain the broad educational background necessary to become leaders in nanoscience and nanotechnology after graduation.  This portfolio program is an efficient and effective introduction to nanoscience and nanotechnology for students from a wide range of technical disciplines.  Portfolio programs are not degree programs.  To be eligible to participate in a portfolio program, students must be admitted into one of the university’s graduate degree programs.

The Nano Portfolio Program was first offered in Fall 2002.  Since then over one hundred PhD students from more than a dozen different departments have completed the program.  Current and past enrollment includes students from the following departments from the College of Natural Sciences and the Cockrell School of Engineering: Chemistry & Biochemistry, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Petroleum & Geosystems Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Molecular Genetics & Microbiology, Pharmacy, and Human Ecology.
