In summer 2012, eight high school students joined graduate and undergraduate students in the Department of Chemical Engineering for six weeks of laboratory research as Polymer Envoys. These “layered research teams” attacked problems related to membrane properties and performance and made significant contributions to ongoing projects. Each student gave a final presentation of results at the end of the summer. The 2012 Polymer Envoys were Amy Johnson and Monica Ramirez from the Texas School for the Deaf and Advaith Anand, Juan Vences-Benitez, John Patrick Ga, Carlos Alvarez, Yahir Bravo, and Jazmin Ramirez from the Austin Liberal Arts and Science Academy at LBJ High School. Monica is now a student at UT Austin. Advaith, Amy, Carlos, and Juan plan to participate in 2013 before going on to college as STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) majors.
